It’s been a while since an entirely new crag was found in the South Lakes but low and behold a couple of weeks ago one “turned up”!
The Shuck’s Lair is an interesting feature; essentially a south facing craglet of excellent quality limestone situated on the northern flanks of Longtail Wood in a close proximity to the well documented tiers of Fairy Steps. The name of the buttress (and some of the problems) comes with reference to the alleged supernatural quadrupeds which roam the woodland. Two fearsome doglike beasts are said to stalk the undergrowth from dusk till dawn. The first of which (The Cappel) is said to be a ferocious creature with an unrelenting blood lust, much akin to Connan Doyles creation in “The Hound of the Baskervilles”. The second, and less imaginatively titled “Headless Hound”, is said to be a more phantom-like critter and to bring death to those it is seen to follow. The generic title for such incarnations is a Shuck.
To date the crag purveys around ten boulder problems, this might not sound a great deal but the interesting thing about this buttress is – that like is close neighbor Woodwell – nearly all the lines hosted are tough hombres, with 9 of the lines being in the Font 7’s. The best of the bunch are The Cappel (Fnt7b+) a superb and unrelenting lip traverse, The Slope-a-Dope (Fnt6c+) another sustained affair on fine limestone slopers and finally the gut bustingly good Brane World (Fnt7c+) the obvious steep roof crack in the center of the crag, which packs it in all the way!
